You spend hours researching and trying to find a theme that allows you to provide a safe environment that stimulates his creativity, but he may want something as simple as a "home on the range." Give him a room with a cowboy theme where, according to the poem by Dr. Brewster Higley, "the deer and the antelope play" and "where seldom is heard a discouraging word and the skies are not cloudy all day." The theme can work for both boys and girls and can be as dramatic or as subtle as your budget and creativity allow.
Walls and Windows
Keep the walls simple so that when she grows out of the cowgirl theme, you won't have to repaint the room. Choose a paint color that provides a neutral background and won't compete with the accessories and furniture for visual attention. A light beige is reminiscent of the prairie while a warm yellow reminds one of riding off into the sunset. Bring in the cowgirl theme with whimsical curtain valances. Drape bandanas or bandanna tablecloths over plain panel curtains for instant cowgirl appeal. Cowgirl-themed sheets in prints, such as cowhide or cowboys roping steers, can be attached to a curtain rod with curtain rings for a new interpretation of traditional curtains.
Furniture
Choose beds, bureaus and desks in stained or natural wood hues or painted in shades of light sandy brown or dark chocolate brown. Again, choose pieces that will last with him and outlast his many trends. Add cowboy flair to the dresser by replacing its drawer pulls with Western-themed pulls, such as stars and cowboy hats. Focus your decorating attention on the bedding. Provide shelves for her collection of plastic horses and cowboy boots.
Flooring
A true cowboy room requires a wood floor which is common for a cowboy ranch on the range. Wide plank wood floors lend a rustic cowboy feel but can be cold. Provide warmth and extend the cowboy theme with a rug, either in bold stripes that complement the walls or in a pattern that directly matches the bedding. Don't let a carpet deter you from providing a theme rug. A cowhide rug, either real or faux, adds authenticity to any floor. Provide comfortable floor pillows which complement the bedding and curtains so the cowpoke can stretch out on the floor and play his guitar. Install a child-size teepee in a spare corner where he can relax after a long day of pretending to be on the plains.
